Tiny dancers

The day started well. Bruno, the innkeeper drove me to a pharmacy and to get phone credits. Apparently, I cannot buy chits ahead of time and add them as necessary. I have to go to a dealer each time. It might have something to do with getting my SIM card in Bali. Either way, I have no idea on how to check if I'm running out.

Bruno drove me because it started to rain, and tropical rains tend to be heavy. We talked about my interest in getting a car and driver to take me to the Harau Valley tomorrow, and my motivation for coming here -- to see a duck race.

I have no idea whether any work has been done towards that. Only that Bruno and his wife have talked.

I went for a walk at the same time as the young French couple that rolled in late last night. She recognized me from the departure lounge in Jakarta. The one I sat in for seven hours.

We passed by a very ornate building when the rain got harder, and there was something going on, so we went in. It was a kid’s dance contest!

The traditional costumes were amazing, as was the dance itself. We stayed for two dances, the second featuring a five year old. She wasn't as animated as the nine year olds from the first dance, but hers went on for almost five minutes and she remembered it all.

After that, parents started hovering around the young French woman, asking her to pose with their daughters. The poor girls did not share the excitement of their parents, so we left so as not to distract from the dancing.

The French couple and I parted ways soon after. I wanted my lunch in a shopping mall restaurant; they wanted the traditional market.

update:  Tomorrow, I might see a duck race!  Through many assumptions and miscommunications, we have now confirmed that I'm interested in a day trip, and the most important thing is a duck race. However, these are sometimes only held on holidays. Tomorrow happens to be a holiday, so my chances are better than I thought.

I'm in Padang for five nights. There's not a lot to do here, particularly when it's raining. Wish me luck. The day trip will be expensive. The rest of the week will not.
